This program for youth and families will shine a light on some of the most representative female jazz legends that once lived in the great borough of Queens: Eva Taylor, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Lena Horne. Besides taking a deep dive into their impressive catalog, we will learn about their lives and work in their communities.

From vocalist and curator Claudia Zanes: “These artists inspire me always, so I want to share my musical experiences and hopefully inspire you, too! In an effort to bring us together as a community, we will interact with each other through improvisation. After I teach you some basic techniques for improvising, you will have an opportunity to try out your own scatting with live piano accompaniment! Jazz music is about having fun with other musicians while exploring ways to express yourself through music. I am sure you will want more jazz in your life after this experience. Let’s have fun together!”
