Nixtaband is a New York City ensemble comprised of musicians with roots based in Mexico, and the US. The repertoire is largely based on Mexican Folk music with contemporary Jazz and Latin Jazz influences. The name Nixtaband is derived from the word Nixtamal: the kernels of corn that are used to create masa. Masa is the main ingredient for many traditional Mexican dishes. In Mexico, masa is the foundation of nutrition for society. “We believe music is the nutrition for the soul.”
