Francis Poulenc’s powerful opera, Dialogues of the Carmelites, tells the true story of sixteen Carmelite nuns who sacrificed their lives at the guillotine during the French Revolution. Since its premiere in 1957, audiences around the world have been captivated and inspired by the tortured journey of the central character, Blanche de la Force, and the mysterious destiny of the Carmelite martyrs. With his lush and wrenching score, Poulenc masterfully dramatizes their plight. From the opening chords, the drama steadily builds towards the final scene in which the nuns sing the stirring Salve Regina as they march to their deaths.
