Trumpeter/composer Etienne Charles will perform his original full-length work, San Jose Suite, in this exciting virtual concert. This project of Etienne’s explores grooves, song forms and rituals of the Caribbean and greater African Diaspora through original compositions and improvisation. In performance, the interpretations and inspirations of compositions spark thought, newfound interest and dialogue regarding current and historical events and their effects on society. His experiences in America as an immigrant and a young man of color greatly influence his work as he seeks to understand his own journey. At its heart San Jose Suite is about the importance of sustaining community through the retention of musical culture as an act of resistance to exploitation and appropriation.

This engagement is part of The American Mosaic virtual concert series, which is presented in collaboration with Chamber Music Pittsburgh and the Garth Newel Music Center, and is made possible by Chamber Music America’s Presenter Consortium for Jazz program, funded through the generosity of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
