American Mosaic Virtual Jazz Series: LENORA ZENZALAI HELM

Saturday, April 16, 2022, 7:00 pm

$10 – $25

Lenora Zenzalai Helm is an accomplished and highly versatile jazz vocalist, big band bandleader, composer, arranger, songwriter, lyricist, educator, and vocal musicianship coach, with seven recordings as a leader, her own recording and publishing company, Zenzalai Music, and an extensive discography with some of the biggest names in jazz and contemporary music. Her achievements have garnered accolades as “…the voice of her generation,” by Jazziz Magazine and is a recipient of numerous international honors and fellowships including former U.S. Jazz Ambassador and Fulbright senior music specialist. In this virtual concert, Lenora will perform her full suite of music, Journeywoman, a work which teems with story-telling, influences from the African diaspora and traditional jazz influences. The work tells the story of a life journey starting at death and walking backward. In her words, “This journey is often unseen and unappreciated for the tremendous impact it has on society as a whole, or its representation as a microcosm of the macrocosm.”

This engagement is part of The American Mosaic virtual concert series, which is presented in collaboration with Chamber Music Pittsburgh and the Garth Newel Music Center, and is made possible by Chamber Music America’s Presenter Consortium for Jazz program, funded through the generosity of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
