Understatements: Lost and Found in Asian America

Friday, January 6, 2023

FREE

Understatements: Lost and Found in Asian America runs from September 28, 2022 – January 6, 2023 at Godwin-Ternbach Museum, Queens College.

Curated by Herb Hoi Chun Tam of Museum of Chinese in America, these artists explore Asian American identity today from a multitude of artistic perspectives. Artists include: Mika Agari, Emmy Catedral, Xingjian Ding, Kiani Ferris, Megan Mi-Ai Lee, Jeremy Yuto Nakamura, Sharmistha Ray, and Yu-Wen Wu. Generations of artists, art historians and curators have puzzled over the question “What is Asian American art?” The multi-generational artists included in Understatements propose a daily practice of intimate gestures that light potential entry points into and exits out of the long shadow of Asian American identity. Experimenting in various media and processes including glass, bronze, drawing, poetry, painting, video, and the found object, they get lost in the minor registers of feelings, representations, and subjectivities that are the fragments of Asian American sensibility. If Asian American art can be seen as a counter-narrative project that has sought to boldly assert what had been unseen, these artists claim a different route, a restless wandering that can unearth new questions about who we are.
