First Acts: There is a Portal

Monday, April 23, 2018, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

A Bahn Mi sandwich, a Fence, and a Red Thread illustrate moments of loss, war, and rupture in this solo show that asks for audience participation in telling stories to find our way back to each other.

This piece is the reluctant second in a series exploring the domestic war on terror and how fear and hatred have eaten away at the fabric of American society. The protagonist weaves together childhood recollections and personal stories of immigration with the political history of US intervention in the Middle East and the propaganda that accompanies war and violence abroad. Using audience participation to establish themes such as loss, hatred, rupture, and connection, this show offers a theatrical space for truth-telling and healing from the internalized effects of hatred and fear.

This piece is a very real and personal exploration of the internal battles that immigrants, specifically those of South Asian/Arab/Muslim heritage, have to endure in order to survive daily life in an environment where they, and their family members, can be turned into enemy aliens at a moment’s notice. I want a space where each person can honestly look at how the last 15 years of media messages and US policy decisions have installed paranoia, fear, and fractured our connections from one another. Through the show and post-show engagement, I hope people can find their way back to trust, connection, and unity.
