ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Tlen Huicani

Celebrating its 53rd anniversary, Tlen Huicani, from Veracruz’s capital city Xalapa, is one of Mexico’s most revered interpreters of traditional folk music. Meaning “The Singers” in the indigenous Nahuatl language, the group has championed the harpa jarocha (folk harp), making it the centerpiece of their music. Founded in 1973, Tlen Huicani was named Best Folk Group in Mexico by the Union of Music and Theater Critics. Their director, Alberto de la Rosa, is one of the country’s most respected musicians and a globally renowned folk harpist.

Mariachi Real De Mexico

Founded in 1991 by Ramon Ponce and his son Ramon Ponce Jr., Mariachi Real De Mexico is celebrating 35 years as one of the most sought-after mariachi ensembles in New York City and the Northeast. A GRAMMY-winning group, they are widely recognized as cultural ambassadors of mariachi music.

Ballet Folklorico Mexicano de Nueva York (BFMNY)

For over 42 years, the Ballet Folklorico Mexicano de Nueva York (BFMNY) has shared its passion for Mexican folkloric dance with the New York community. A nonprofit organization, BFMNY is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the regional dances that have shaped Mexico’s cultural heritage. The company has performed at prestigious venues across the Northeast, captivating audiences with their dynamic and authentic performances.

Special Guests

• Mireya Ramos is a Latin Grammy–winning vocalist, musician, composer, producer, arranger, and founder of Flor de Toloache, New York City’s only all-women mariachi. A multiple Latin Grammy and Grammy nominee, she embodies a wide range of musical influences—from classical and mariachi to salsa, merengue, and hip-hop—creating a unique and refreshing sound. Her versatility, natural improvisational skills, and rich tone have made her one of the leading Latin artists in New York City.

• Alexander Ponce is a fifth-generation mariachi and the newest member of Mariachi Real De Mexico. The son of the ensemble’s current director, Ramon Ponce Jr., Alexander made his performance debut in 2024 at Kupferberg Center for the Arts’ Cinco de Mayo celebration. He has since performed at Times Square and 54 Below in New York City. Proud to carry on his family’s century-long mariachi legacy, Alexander is dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich traditions of Mexican music.
