Ravi Coltrane is a critically acclaimed, Grammy-nominated saxophonist, bandleader, and composer. Over the course of a 20-plus-year career, Coltrane has worked as a sideman for many and has recorded notable albums both as a leader and collaborator.
He has released six albums as a leader: Moving Pictures, From The Round Box, Mad 6, In Flux, Blending Times, and Spirit Fiction. His collaborations include Seraphic Light with Joe Lovano and David Liebman, In Movement with Jack DeJohnette and Matthew Garrison, and the Blue Note 70th Anniversary recording Mosaic: A Celebration of Blue Note. Additional credits include performances and recordings with Elvin Jones, Terence Blanchard, Kenny Barron, Steve Coleman, McCoy Tyner, Jack DeJohnette, Matt Garrison, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Geri Allen, Joanne Brackeen, and The Blue Note 7, among others.
Born in Long Island as the second son of John Coltrane and Alice Coltrane, Ravi was named after Indian sitar legend Ravi Shankar. After his father’s death in 1967, his family relocated to Los Angeles, where he was raised. His mother, Alice Coltrane, was a significant influence on his musical development. It was Ravi who encouraged her return to performance and recording after a long hiatus, ultimately producing and performing on her 2004 release Translinear Light.
Ravi lives in Brooklyn, NY, and maintains a fast-paced schedule of touring, recording, composing, and performing. He also leads the effort to restore the John Coltrane Home in Dix Hills, Long Island (www.thecoltranehome.org) and oversees key reissues of his parents’ recordings.
