QC MLK Day Celebration: Tyreek McDole

SUN, JAN 18, 3 PM
Goldstein Theatre
“A leading jazz voice of his generation.”
The New York Sun

Join rising jazz vocalist Tyreek McDole for a performance inspired by his debut album Open Up Your Senses. Blending original songs with freedom songs and spirituals, McDole creates a space for reflection, unity, and collective healing. This is more than a concert—it’s a journey through sound, rooted in the rich legacy of Black American Music.

This concert is part of KCA’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration. For more than a decade, KCA and Queens College have held a special annual event in honor and memory of Dr. King’s legacy and his connection to Queens College, where he delivered a powerful speech from the stage of Colden Auditorium in 1965.

This special program includes a recognition ceremony and keynote address at 3 PM by the event’s honoree, Carol Jenkins, American women’s rights activist, author, television host, and former television journalist, followed by the Tyreek McDole Quintet concert at 4 PM. This recognition event is co-sponsored by the Office of Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, Jr.

Tyreek McDole is a vocalist guided by a singular belief: music is one of the most powerful forms of communication. With a voice steeped in depth, spirit, and soul, he invites audiences into a musical journey rooted in reflection, healing, and the radical act of dreaming together.

His program, inspired by his critically acclaimed debut album Open Up Your Senses (Artwork Records, ★★★★ DownBeat Magazine), weaves original compositions with freedom songs, spirituals, and works that speak to justice, unity, and ancestral remembrance. Drawing from the deep well of Black American Music—jazz, soul, and spiritual traditions—McDole creates a performance that honors the past while propelling its legacy into the future.

Guided by a deeply philosophical approach to performance and a commitment to carrying forward the work of Black American artists who stirred hearts and awakened consciousness, McDole transforms the stage into more than a concert venue. It becomes a healing space, a ritual, and a call to open up your senses.
