Step into the heart of the Mississippi Delta in 1945 with a compelling staged reading of Mississippi Land by Gina Keys. Proudly presented by the Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College, and directed by Alicia Whavers and Gayle Samuels, with executive producers Leon and Dave Huie, Mississippi Land explores the complexity and challenges facing African Americans after the Civil War. It underscores the grit and strength of southern women determined to build generational wealth amid the threat of government land Theft.

SYNOPSIS: In Greenville Mississippi after the civil war, a time when African American Land ownership was at it’s peak in America, the Williams family, a family of sharecroppers, managed to acquire the land their ancestors once lived and worked as slaves. The year is 1945 and the matriarch of the family Ethel-Mae, Is determined to keep the tradition of land ownership and family legacy alive. After the recent suicide of her eldest daughter Ruth, Ethel is forced to consider her estranged son Bobby as the beneficiary. Bobby has recently returned to Mississippi with his wife Charlotte (a Caucasian woman) and is determined to claim his legal share. Secrets surface which unearthed the buried beneath the soil. New truths come to light as Ruth is laid to rest. The family must stand united or watch their legacy be stolen by the local government seizing black-owned land illegally.
